About the network

The Swedish Artist Residency Network (SWAN) is an open national network for anyone working or wishing to work with residencies in the fields of art, dance, crafts, film, literature, music, design, and photography. The network has a wide range of stakeholders and represents both artist-led initiatives and institutions.

The network was founded in 2021 and has a 3-year grant from the Swedish Arts Council. The hosting of the SWAN network has been itinerant: In 2020-21, the digital network meetings were hosted by Art Inside Out in Region Halland. In 2022, the Resource Centre for Art, Region Norrbotten hosted the network and organised our first meeting IRL. In 2023, the Baltic Art Center (BAC) will host the network and organise a network meeting in Gotland in October. In June 2023, the non-profit association SWAN was founded to provide a stable organisational base for the network.

As a member of the SWAN network, you can participate in education through digital meetings, lectures, and an annual conference. Our focus is on networking and knowledge sharing. Network membership is free in 2023.

The overall objectives of SWAN are to:

  • Strengthen the role of the residency organizers.

  • Strengthen the industry itself.

  • Attract artists by creating visibility for Swedish residency organisers nationally and internationally.
